Baseball Jargon
Words, acronyms, and definitions that are useful to know in the world of baseball and MLB.
Cleanup
Refers to the fourth position in a lineup.
Deke
An deceptive attempt by a player to make an opposing player move or think in a way that is hurtful to their cause.
Designated Hitter
(DH)
The only position in the lineup where the player won't play on the field. They will bat only.
Double
(2B)
A hit of which allows the runner to reach second base.
Double Play
A play in which two outs were achieved.
Doubleheader
Two games played on the same day between the same teams.
Grand Slam
A home run where runners were on all three basebases. Counts as four runs.
Ground-rule Double
A special type of double where a fair ball either bounces out of play or gets stuck somewhere. All runners, including the batter, are awared two bases.
Home Run
(HR)
A hit that allows a player to reach all bases including home, to come in and score. Typically involes the ball leaving the walls on the field in fair territory or hitting the foul poll, but it doesn't have to.
Leadoff
Can refer to the first position in the lineup or the first batter in an inning.
Lineup
The list of nine batters, in the order of how they will bat.
Major League Baseball
(MLB)
The defacto organization/company running professional baseball in the United States. Within the organization, also represents the highest level of baseball.
Minor League Baseball
(MiLB)
The junior group of organizations associated with MLB. Typically players develop in the MiLB or 'minors' before graduating to the 'majors'.
On Deck
PThe batter that is next up to bat. Typically stands off to the side, taking practice swings.
Play
A continued effort by a defensive player with the ball to get a runner out.
Series
Multiple games played between two games at the same location/stadium. Unlike some other sports, baseball games are usually played in a series.
Single
(1B)
A hit of which allows the runner to reach first base.
Split Doubleheader
A doubleheader that requires seperate admission for fans.
Triple
(3B)
A hit of which allows the runner to reach third base.
Triple Play
A play in which three outs were acheived. Difficult to come by.
Umpire
An MLB official that enforces the rules of the game. Usually four in a game.
World Series
The final series of the playoffs. These are the ultimate games in baseball and would be equivalent to the NFL's Super Bowl.
